Spui Square is located in the centre of Amsterdam. Originally the area was covered with water and in 1882 it was all filled in to become the Square we know today. Spui is next to the Amsterdam University and maybe is the reason why it’s the favourite spot of many artists and intellectuals. Since the 60’s, Spui was the main square for protests and demonstrations. Today, Spui is a mecca for book lovers hosting weekly, one of the most famous book markets in the Netherlands. The market is held every Friday and on Sundays there is also an art market.
