The Theatre Museum is housed in two imposing building at the Herengracht. It delivers a fascinating ‘play’ of the Dutch theatre past and present. The exhibit starts with performances from the middle ages right in the middle of the market with farces and quacks. It moves on to the more elegant and levied 17th century playhouses. During this period new genres started to flourish, for instance ballet and opera. Shifting to present-day theatre, the exhibition focuses on different forms and styles including dance, cabaret, drama, musicals….
