Communication
There is huge range of options from many suppliers with combination deals of telephone (bellen), Internet (surfen) and TV covered by a monthly payment.
Telephones
KPN is the main supplier for land lines providing many business and private connections. The easiest way to get connected is often to visit a KPN shop in the city, supply a proof of identification, a residence permit or employment contract and for people from outside the EU, pay a deposit for a telephone number.
Mobile telephones
KPN, Vodafone, Telfort and T-Mobile are the main suppliers. You’ll need proof of address and income and a bank account to sign a deal. A prepaid phone is more expensive but you are not bind to a contract and can top it up with cards from supermarkets. If your phone is unlocked, you can buy a Dutch SIM.
Internet
All kinds of dial-up, ISDN, ADSL and cable options are available which can be combined with telephone and TV deals. However, you have also the option to go for a TV subscription from one supplier and telephone/Internet from another.
Public Telephones
Public telephone booths are generally located in main towns and cities. Mostly they accept credit cards and pre-paid cards with values starting at €5. The cards may be bought in railway stations, post offices and newsagents. International calls can be made from most public telephones by dialing ’00’ followed by the relevant country code.
Suppliers
You generally pay every quarter.
