Rent Benefit

Rent benefit (huurtoeslag) is intended for people with low income and because of this benefit can still afford to live in a rented accommodation. Eligibility to rent benefit depends on:

  • The composition of the household;
  • The rental price;
  • The level of income.

Within 8 weeks after applying for the rent benefit you will be notified by the tax authority stating the deserved amount of the benefit. From then on the benefit, always paid in advance, will be deposited to your bank account approximately every 20th of the month. In case your personal situation changes, for instance income increases / decreases or the household composition changes, then you have to inform the Tax Office as this may have consequences for the entitlement of the benefit. Annually the Tax Office will calculate and verify the rent benefit you have received during the past year and in case of incorrectness pay out or reclaim the difference.

It is not necessary to apply for the rent benefit for the following year as long as there are no alternations. In this case the Tax Office will assume that your personal situation has not been changed.

The conditions: To be entitled to the rent benefit, the rental price must not exceed € 631,73 per month. In case you are younger than 23 years of age, the rental price must not exceed € 348,99 per month.

Apart from the above, the level of income of a single must not be higher than € 20,975 annually and € 28,475 for cohabitants. In case you are older than 65 years of age the level of income must not be higher than € 19,800 for singles and € 27,075 for cohabitants.
